General Description
History

The official application for our undergraduate program inSocial Studies Education was reviewed by the Higher Education Court on July the 3rd, 2008 and it was founded according to the law no. 2547, article no. 2880 and 7/d-2 in the same year. The first students were accepted in the 2009-2010 academic year. Then, in the 2010-2011 academic year, secondary schooling transfer began. For the academic year 2011-2012, our department had 238 students.

Qualification Awarded

The candidates who fulfill all the requirements of the program are granted the degree of “Undergraduate Diploma in the field of Social Studies Education”

Admission to the program is explained on the website of Recep Tayyip Erdoğan University under the title of “Student Admission and Registration”.

Specific Arrangements For Recognition Of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

For the recognition of the previously taken courses at the Turkish Higher Education institutions, regulations related to undergraduate transfers, external transfers, double major, and sub-major as defined by the Higher Education Court apply.

Students fulfilling all the courses in the program (240 ECTS) and having at least 2.00 GPA out of 4.00 are granted an undergraduate diploma in the field of “Social Studies Education”.

Profile of The Programme

The primary aim of the Social Studies Education Program is to train teachers into developing positive attitudes towards teaching and professional skills in their field. Graduates are expected to be a role model for their students in terms of personal and professional life, to follow the developments in the field, and to have effective communication skills. Besides this, the program aims to train teachers in understanding how students learn, being confident in the use of technology, acquiring problem solving skills, and giving importance to human rights, democracy and ethics. Moreover, the education focuses on critical thinking, personal reflection and professional development of teacher candidates. After completing the program, graduates work at primary schools as social studies teachers.

Access to Further Studies

Students completing their undergraduate education successfully may study on postgraduate programs (MA and PhD) if they have the necessary score from ALES exam and sufficient English language proficiency.

Facilities

With its six lecturers, the Social Studies Education program is located at Block A of the Education Faculty in Çayeli. In the department, there are computer laboratories, a library, basketball and volleyball fields, and table tennis equipment. Also, there are student exchange opportunities in and out of the country through Erasmus and Farabi exchange programs.
