General Description
History

In a constantly changing and developing world, there is a need for trained qualified individuals. The most important element in meeting this need are appropriately trained qualified teachers for each age group. For this purpose, Recep Tayyip Erdogan University, Faculty of Education, Primary School Mathematic Teacher Education Programme was established in 2007, and its first students entered in 2007-2008.

Qualification Awarded

The students who have successfully completed all of the core courses of the programme with 240 ECTS credits and achieved a CGPA of at least 2.00 out of 4.00 are awarded a Bachelor Degree in ELEMENTARY MATHEMATICS EDUCATION

Specific Arrangements For Recognition Of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

Recognition of prior learning is at the beginning stage in the Turkish Higher Education System. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan University and hence the Department of Elementary Mathematics Education is no exception to this. However, exams of exemption are organised at the start of each term of the University for compulsory courses in the curriculum, such as Foreign Languages and Basic Computing. The students who have completed these courses on his/her own or through other means, and believe that they have achieved the learning outcomes specified, are given the right to take the exemption exam. The students who achieve a passing grade from these exams are given an exemption from the related course, in the curriculum, and this grade is entered into the student's transcript.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

The degree is awarded to students who have successfully completed all the courses in the curriculum including summer practices, with a CGPA of 2.00 out of 4.00.

Profile of The Programme

The primary goal of the Department of Elementary Mathematics Education is to train teachers to have a positive attitude towards teaching and have the necessary professional skills for their field. Teachers who graduated from this department are expected to represent an excellent role model for their students in terms of their personal and professional life, to follow innovations in their fields to maintain professional development and acquire effective communication skills. The program also aims to develop teachers with a sound understanding of how children learn; confident in using technology; capable in problem-solving; attentive to human rights, democracy, and ethics. The program emphasises critical thinking, personal reflection, and professional development of preservice teachers, and offers both undergraduate and graduate degrees. When the elementary mathematics student teachers complete this program, they are employed in primary schools.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

The examination, assessment and grading regulations have been set up for the university by the University Senate, and the Department of Elementary Mathematics Education is bound by these regulations. Each course is assessed via a midterm exam, a second mid-term exam composed of quizzes, homeworks and assignments, and a final end-of-term exam, with contributions of 30%, 20% and 50% respectively. The marking is out of 100. Grades of 81-100 are assigned a letter grade of AA, 76-80 BA, 70-75 BB, 60-69 CB, 50-59 CC, 45-49 DC, 40-44 DD, 30-39 FD and 0-29 FF. The AA is the highest grade and has a grade credit of 4.00, BA 3.5, BB 3.0, CB 2.5, CC 2.0, DC 1.5, DD 1.0, FD 0.5 and FF 0.0. Grades of AA to CC are pass, DD to FF fail, and DC is conditional pass and requires a CGPA of at least 2.0 for that term. The details given for each course in the programme include the detailed assessment methods together with a description of the second mid-term exam.

Students who are successful in all courses and have 2.00 (from 0-4 level) average and above from all courses, obtain an undergraduate diploma in the field of Elementary Mathematics Education

Elementary Mathematics Education program is found in B block in the Faculty of Education with 15 academic personnel. The program uses the classrooms and computer rooms in the department
