The general medical education offered by the faculty comprises three major divisions: basic medical sciences, internal and surgical medical sciences. Each of these three major divisions is subdivided into 35 modules. The average annual student intake is approximately 80. The length of the course is six years and the language of instruction is Turkish.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

Medical education is a tiered programme, with all subjects being inter-dependent in an ascending style. The education and training period is six years. The achievement of a total of 360 ECTS credits is required for the awarding of Bachelor of Medicine/Surgery.

Profile of The Programme

The Faculty curriculum is planned to implement the basic requirements for the application of modern medical practice. There are six terms that run annually. There are committees for the basic medical sciences subjects taught within the first three years. These committees number 6 (term 1), 7 (term 2), and 9 (for term 3). The course contents of the committees may or may not overlap. The 4th and 5th years of medical education are in the form of practical training in clinical sciences, the duration of which range from one to ten weeks depending on the subject/division. Training in the 6th year is internship, which enables the student to practice medicine under supervision. This way, the primary objective of the Medical School is to provide the proper education, training, skills and attitude for medical students to become modern physicians who are able to integrate the developments in science and medicine with those of clinical practice and meet the requirements of modern high quality health care for the communities, and who are committed to life-long learning and contributing to science and art of medicine.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates With Examples

Immediately after graduation, the newly qualified medics undertake a two year obligatory health service for the Turkish Government in primary health care, community health care or the emergency services of public hospitals, the location of which is decided by the casting of lots by the Ministry of Health. During this period and after, those who wish to specialize in any aspect of medicine take the twice yearly organised medical residency/specialisation exam organised by the Higher Education Council Student Selection and Placement Centre (ÖSYM). The length of training for specialisation is 4 years and takes place in any university research hospital or in the research and training hospitals of the Ministry of Health. The specialists are eligible to practice in the private or public domains of health care establishments. Working for any establishment of the Ministry of Health for health care administrative and planning posts is a further option available to the specialists. The medical school graduates are also eligible for PhD studies in any suitable institution.

Access to Further Studies

Medical school graduates are eligible for PhD studies in basic medical sciences, and for residency in any subdivision of the internal and surgical medical sciences in accordance with their score in the Medical Specialisation Exam (TUS) that is organised by ÖSYM.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

The Education and Training Examinations Guidelines of the Faculty of Medicine (of Recep Tayyip Erdogan University) are followed.

Graduation Requirements

Students who complete the six year education successfully with 360 ECTS credits become eligible for graduation. However, they obtain their graduation certificates (diplomas) from the Ministry of Health after having done the two-year-long compulsory health service for the Turkish Government.
