General Description
History

In a constantly changing and developing world, there is a need for trained qualified individuals to teach appropriately. The most important element in meeting this need is the training of qualified teachers. For this purpose,the Recep Tayyip Erdogan University, Faculty of Education, Primary Science Teacher Education Programme was established in 2008, and enrolled its first students in 2008-2009.

Qualification Awarded

The students who have successfully completed all of the courses, of the programme with 240 ECTS credits and achieved a CGPA of at least 2.00 out of 4.00 are awarded a Bachelor Degree in PRIMARY SCHOOL SCIENCE TEACHER EDUCATION.

Specific Admission Requirements

1 - To have a high school and their equivalents diploma, 2 – Get obtain grades at university entrance exam conducted bythe Turkish Republic, Assessment, Selection and Placement Center

Specific Arrangements For Recognition Of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

Recognition of prior formal learning, vertical, horizontal and transitions within the university in institutions of the Turkish Higher Education is carried out under the basis of regulation of Transferring Between Programs of the Higher Education Associate Degree and Degree-Level, Double Major, Minor and Making Credit Transfer Inter-Agency defined by The Council of Higher Education. Except formal education institutions, the process of recognition of non-formal certificate based and experience based learning is still in its early stages in Turkey. For this reason recognition of prior learning in all programs in Recep Tayyip Erdogan University is not fully initialized. However, an exemption exam is held for the Computer, English and German courses which take place in the programmes' education schedule, at the beginning of each academic term. The students who consider they have the relevant qualifications, have the right to take these exams, and successful students will be exempt from the relevant courses.

A Bachelor Degree is awarded to students who have successfully completed all the courses in the curriculum, with a CGPA of 2.00 out of 4.00.

Profile of The Programme

The primary goal of the Department of Primary School Science Education is to train teachers to have positive attitudes towards teaching and have the necessary professional skills for their field. Teachers who graduated from this department are expected to represent a role model for their students in terms of their personal and professional life, to follow innovations in their fields to maintain professional development and have effective communication skills. The program also aims to develop teachers who have an understanding of life-long learning, confident in using technology, capable in problem solving, attentive to human rights, democracy, and ethics, investigation and questioning.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates With Examples

The students who have successfully completed all of the courses of the programme with 240 ECTS credits and achieved a CGPA of at least 2.00 out of 4.00 are awarded a Bachelor Degree in PRIMARY SCHOOL SCIENCE TEACHER EDUCATION. They are employed as science and technology teachers in both public and private primary schools.

Access to Further Studies

As long as candidates, who successfully complete the undergraduate degree, obtain the necessary points from ALES and have adequate English language skills, are eligible to study at postgraduate level (masters and doctoral).

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Each student is subject to a midterm exam and a final end of term exam with contributions of 40% and 60%. All exams are assessed out of 100. Obtaining 45 from the final end of term exam is obligatory. Students who have the grades (AA), (BA), (BB), (CB) and (CC) from one lesson are viewed as successful. At the end of each semester, students can take make-up examinations on any courses from that particular semester.

Graduation Requirements

Students who are successful in all courses and have 2.00 (from 0-4 level) average and above from all courses, obtain an undergraduate diploma in the field of Middle School Science Teacher Education.

Facilities

In Primary School Science Education Programme, there is a total of 11 teaching staff: 1 associate professor, 5 assistant professors and 5 research assistants. The students who have successfully completed all of courses on the programme with 240 ECTS credits and achieved a CGPA of at least 2.00 out of 4.00 are given a Bachelor Degree in PRIMARY SCHOOL SCIENCE TEACHER EDUCATION. Students who graduated successfully are qualified to be employed as science and technology teachers, in both public and private primary schools.
