General Description
History

The Department of English Language and Literature was founded under Karadeniz Technical University Rize Faculty of Arts and Sciences in compliance with Cabinet Decision No.9892 dated 01 September 1997, which was published in the Official Gazette of TR No.23099 on 3 September 1997. The Department of English Language and Literature was assigned to Rize University Faculty of Arts and Sciences on March 17, 2006. The department started undergraduate education in the academic year of 2016/17 with 40 students under Recep Tayyip Erdogan University Faculty of Arts and Sciences. The department consists of one professor, two assistant professors, one lecturer, four research assistants; the department employs 8 academicians and one department secretary.

Qualification Awarded

Graduates who successfully complete all requirements of the programme will receive a "Bachelor’s Degree in English Language and Literature."

Specific Admission Requirements

In order to study at undergraduate programs, it is required to pass the examination held by Assessment, Selection and Placement Center (ÖSYM), and it is compulsory not to have registered at another formal higher education program. For foreign students, rules in RTEU International Student Application and Registration Instruction are carried out.

Specific Arrangements For Recognition Of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

If the students register at the program through new registration, vertical transfer or lateral transfer, the courses which they have taken and succeeded in the earlier education programs are determined by the faculty/school/vocational school board of management with the proposal of the department board. The students are exempted from the courses which are seen fit. Yet, they have to make application for exemption within the ten workdays after the beginning of courses in the year/term.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

The Department of English Language and Literature offers a 4-year undergraduate programme excluding the preparatory year. The registered students take an English proficiency exam to be exempted from the preparatory class. The qualification requirement for graduation is to complete all courses of the programme successfully (240 ECTS in total) and achieve a GPA of at least 2.00 out of 4.00.

Profile of The Programme

The Department of English Language and Literature has two sub-departments: English Culture and Literature and Linguistics. The aim of the department is to educate its students as individuals and help them speak English fluently and teach English, have a critical point of view, use the knowledge of English Language and Literature effectively, know the basic components of Western culture and function as a bridge between the values of the West and our country, express themselves in any environment, carry out research in their own fields and evaluate their research from an objective and scientific point of view. The main goal of our department is to continue an education with an innovative and critical perspective, strengthen our teaching staff day by day with qualified instructors, help students expand their horizons through various international conferences and in this way increase their interaction and exchange of ideas with other participants and the academicians in other cities and countries, supply them with student exchange programmes like Erasmus and help them use the educational facilities in a best way, and make them more equipped by not only supporting them to improve their English language skills but also encouraging them to learn other languages like German and French. Additionally, the department aims to educate successful individuals who can think universally in practice and adapt their theoretical knowledge and skills to the field of education and working area.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates With Examples

Those who graduate from English Language and Literature programme have extensive job opportunities in the public and private sectors. They can work as academicians in departments such as English Language and Literature, English Language Teaching, and Comparative Literature at state and foundation universities. Graduates can work as English teachers on the condition that they complete the Pedagogical Formation Certificate Program. They can work as copywriters in sectors like publishing and advertising. They can also work as translators in many public and private institutions.

Access to Further Studies

The candidates who successfully complete their undergraduate studies can continue a graduate education in their own field or in related fields provided that they get valid relevant scores from ALES and possess sufficient foreign language knowledge (proved by YDS and equivalent exams).

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

According to the rules of Recep Tayyip Erdogan University "Associate Degree and Undergraduate Degree Education-Examination Regulations", the students are required to take midterm exams, midterm studies (project, homework, laboratory, practice and similar studies) and final exams for each course. The contribution of the midterm exam is 40% and the contribution of the final exam is 60%. All exams are evaluated over 100 points. There is a requirement to take at least 50 points from the final exams. The students getting one of the letter grades (AA), (BA), (BB), (CB) and (CC) are considered successful. The students with a semester average of at least 2.00 will be considered successful from the courses with (DC) letter grades. In addition, the form of assessment and evaluation applied for each course is defined in detail by the course instructor in the "Course Catalogue Form".

Facilities

There are cafeterias, library, dining hall, free wired and wireless networks, gym, tennis court, football field, indoor sports hall, post office, hairdressers, dry cleaner’s, billiard, bowling and ice-skating areas for the students to develop themselves in a social and cultural way and have a good time during their free times.
